Nail Care

Nail care refers to the treatment of the fingernails and toenails. Poor nail care is to blame for a lot of nail issues. To discourage bacteria and other infectious organisms from forming under the nails, keep them clean and dry, trim them straight across with only a tiny curving at the tip, file them using a fine-textured file to keep them shaped and free of snags, and avoid biting your nails. Toenails that are thick and difficult to cut should be soaked in warm salt water (1 tsp salt to 1 pint water) for 5 to 10 minutes, then trimmed with a 10% urea cream (available at drugstores without a prescription). Ingrown toenails should not be ‘digged out,’ especially if they are painful.
